Urban Farming: An Approach To Tackle Food Crisis

Anusha Satyal, Kavre

Simply, urban farming is growing food in the cities or towns. Urban farming is basically practiced to meet the daily kitchen requirement in Nepal and this approach is much more important than ever.

Nepal is one of the 10 least urbanized countries in the world. However, we cannot deny the fact that it is also one of the 10 fastest urbanizing countries not only in the Asia Pacific Region but also in the world. After the disastrous earthquake the pace of urbanization is even raising and it would rather increase due to social, economic and creative opportunities that people acquire.

n highly populated cities like Kathmandu, Pokhara, Hetauda, Biratnagar, Butwal, Nepalgunj etc the higher price of poor quality agricultural commodities is consistently being a major issue. Additionally, Nepal though is an agricultural country, the local demand of agricultural products is not fulfilled by the local product. Thus, yearly agricultural commodities worth in billion is imported to the country:mostly from India. Consequently, urban farming is the key solution to address the food crisis in the present context as vegetable like spinach, spring onion, coriander, spring garlic, tomatoes etc. can be grown.

There are number of techniques that can be practiced in urban farming such as; Aeroponics, Hydroponics, Vertical gardening, Rooftop gardening, Backyard gardening, Indoor gardening, Balcony gardening and so on. Among different types of urban farming, rooftop has got more popularity in the cities of Nepal. The number of households interested in rooftop farming is increasing due to cheap cost and convenient method.

Mostly people use perforated water jars, plastic bags and plastic bottles for the purpose of farming and biodegradable waste from the kitchen as the fertilizer ensuring the double benefits; saving the cost of fertilizer and managing biodegradable waste appropriately.

Rooftop farming: Smart Urban Agriculture

The term urbanization basically means more number of cities and more flow of people to these cities from the rural areas. In the name of urbanization and development, our environment is facing more problems like pollution in air, water, sound and water which ultimately degrades the environment in long run.

Urbanization has prime effect on the food productivity as well as environmental sustainability. More number of arable land are being urbanized which is the biggest challenge for the food- insecure country like Nepal. Furthermore, due to unplanned and haphazard urbanization, the question regarding the ecological balance and sustainability are being raised. In order to overcome these two major issues to some extent, rooftop farming could be the best choice for the number of advantages.

Actually, the benefits of this farming are not only for individuals but the city as a whole. Farming on the roof of the house could be a recreational activity in the hectic schedule for every individual family. Similarly, the organic vegetables and fruits grown in own garden saves people lives from the hazardous residues of chemical pesticide. Also, a huge amount of cash can be saved as the organic products are expensive in the market indeed. The cities of Nepal are converting into concrete jungle and increment in the average temperature is the subject of concern. In this case also plants on the rooftop aid in providing shade so that temperature is reduced and also adds aesthetic beauty to the urban areas. Likewise, air pollution also declined with this smart notion.

Urban farming could literally lead to smart city for healthy living. A step towards healthy living could save our lives as well as our earth which is being continuously exploited by us. Therefore, Urban farming is a smart agriculture for smart city by smart people.
